Improving Conversions With Peel Away Ads

I just recently purchased a new advertising script for some of my niche websites that I thought I would share with those of you who are interested in making money online.

The website script is Peel Away Ads.

Peel Away Ads are the next generation in website advertising. They are much less intrusive than popup ads and those seizure-inducing animated banner ads you see all over the interweb. Peel away ads show-up on your site as a little dog-ear on the corner of your page and will only show the advertisement when your visitor moves their mouse over it.

I saw this type of ad when I was doing some research for my free online games website and I was really intrigued by it. Of course, my gnat-sized attention span allowed me to forget about it until I ran across it again last week.

As you would expect, the peel away ads site has the same old sales copy: blah, blah, blah, but, they have a “special offer” page where you can get the peel away ad script for only $17. I don’t have any problem spending a little money if it’s going to help me make more in the long run, so I thought: “What the hell; go for it!” …and I did.

Right after my purchase, I immediately received the download link for the peel away script and a series of very well put together videos that outline the configuration and installation process. They also provided several other script examples for rotating the ads, different (or all) corner placement, and even a pre-configured peel for their affiliate program. Sweet!

Within a half an hour of watching the videos and setting up my own custom peel, I had the script live on my game site.

Take a look at my implementation: http://www.freegamepad.com/

I’m no expert at this affiliate marketing stuff, but these are the reasons I think peel away ads may help me improve the conversions on my niche websites:

  • Peel away ads are not in your face like popups, popunders, or banner ads.
  • Visitors might be more apt to click through to the offer out of curiosity.
  • Peel aways are relatively new to the scene, so ad blindness should be minimal.

If you’re interested in using the peel away ad script on your site, make sure you order from the special offer page to get it for $17 and save yourself $10.

It certainly is very interesting. I’m in the process of adding it to some of my other sites now, so I’ll post an update after a month or so.

I’ve never hear of this ad system. Seems legit enough. Nothing ventured nothing gaineds.

  6. Mario on January 19th, 2008

That is very interesting, you will have to keep us updated on how well it performs.

  7. vegas on January 20th, 2008

I have seen a lot of these being used lately, I was wondering if they actually worked. How successful have they been for you so far?

I have thought about using them on a few sites but I wasn’t sure if they would get on the readers nerves, have you had any complaints?

  8. Kitchen Gadgets on January 20th, 2008

I’ll have to check back and see if you have an update on those.

  9. Donovan on January 21st, 2008

I think it’s still a little too early to tell how successful these ads will be, but it’s looking good so far.

My click throughs have already improved by about 50% and my ad conversions are steadily increasing.

One of my sites is not doing anything with these ads, but it may have to do more with the ads I’ve placed rather than the peel page itself.

So far, I haven’t heard any complaints about these ads and they don’t appear to affect the page load speed.

That’s very intriguing. Thanks for giving me something interesting to read.

I do like their execution. The script looks good. But for the love of all that is good and holy, that squeeze page is the absolute epitomy of hard sell squeeze pages that turns off savvy webmasters/advertisers the instant it loads.

  12. Donovan on January 22nd, 2008

Robb: I couldn’t agree with you more, the sales copy on that site is brutal.

Does anyone really read all that stuff? I know I didn’t, I just skimmed the page because I was ready to buy anyway.

  13. vegas on January 23rd, 2008

well i look forward to seeing your results I hope you do a post in the future about the results.

  14. Jed on January 23rd, 2008

I think this is intriguing because it gives the viewer the choice to view the ad or not. It takes the pushy used car salesman attitude out of pop-up ads.

  15. Donovan on January 23rd, 2008

Jed: I couldn’t agree with you more! That simple fact is what lead me to buy peel away ads in the first place.

    Ahhh! I love it!
Popup ads are the bane of my existence!
The peelaway ads are discreet, but effective.

yeah!! peel away ads look better. the other wierd ads take up a lot of screen time when u cud be doing a lot of other work. thanx for such a nice insight.

  21. Sapan Behar on January 26th, 2008

Anything that gets rid of popup ads is a good thing. I like the faded, see though ones though. They get your message across, give a option to close it without being intrusive and you know that if someone clicks on it, they are somewhat interested in whatever you are promoting

  22. El Yanqui on January 28th, 2008

I’m intrigued. This sounds like a very good way to do advertising without ruining the design of a site. That is the number one reason that I haven’t used any ads on my site.

  23. Donovan on January 28th, 2008

You should definitely check them out and see if they are a good fit for your site. I’m happy with the performance of my ads so far.

Now, I’m trying to find some higher paying offers to promote and see if do as well with those.

  24. Donovan on January 28th, 2008

I’m very pleased how positive most of your comments are regarding peel ads. It just goes to show that a good number of people don’t mind these type of ads.

  25. Ibanez on January 30th, 2008

Not as annoying as popups…but almost as annoying. I’m a bit leery of these.

I am running Firefox on Ubuntu Linux.

  29. Brennan on February 19th, 2008

It seems to me that this isn’t really “the next generation of marketing” since it’s still subscribing to interrupting/distracting the internet user.

Haven’t the statistics shown that banner ads are in serious decline? It would seem to me that people are tired of being interrupted.

That said, it is a very interesting post. Keep it up!

A new way to market, however, I hate when they get in the way when using a seach box right newxt to it!

  43. Olivier - 7 laws of attraction on April 23rd, 2008

I really dislike these ads. They keep getting in the way, and usually they slow down the loading of the pages. On my blog, I prefer the small line on top of the page that moves down when you scroll donw.
I guess that’s why I installled in on my blog :-)

I agree with you..Peel Away Ads are much better than banner and pop up ads…because it is more effective especially now that people have this tendency to ignore pop up and banner ads..^^..this is what they call banner blindness.

  46. jessie |thedirtfarmer.com on April 30th, 2008

Peel away ads are not in your face like popups, popunders, or banner ads. I feel the same way. I’m so tired of the ads that are always there. I think this is a great idea. It gives the person a choice if they want to look at the ad or not.
thanks for your blog. We’ll check into these ads.

I run a small but successive Norwegian SEO company located in Bergen. I always keep looking for articles, posts, comments and other inspiring materials to motivate me and my colleagues to provide not only the best SEO, but also to continue to educate and rise our understanding of old and new techniques in the SEO field. We also deliver Google Adwords campaigns for our customers together with Yahoo Search Engine Marketing. Other ads systems are always interesting and I appreciate to read your article. We are always looking for ways to improve convertion rates and are always open for new ideas like this!

    Thanks!

I forgot to tell that Joomla does have some very nice functions to implement peel away ads. I have used this on several websites before but have not really looked into the effects before reading this post. The ads are converting better in fact :-)

I work for a media buying company and we have been using peel aways for a few months now. While we all really like the “out of the way” aspect of it, our ctr has been fairly low. We might need to evaluate the types of pages that these are going onto as that could be the problem. We have gotten responses that people like these ads though as they aren’t intrusive. The accidental hover rate seems to be high too as people hit the peel trying to access the scroll bar.

  53. Louisville Chris on May 15th, 2008

That’s definitely worth trying out. I have seen these lately and really like them. They are not as obtrusive as most ads. The ads that expand when you hover are taking over to the point that you can’t put your mouse anywhere on the page without an add filling the screen.
