Is Akismet Killing My Legitimate Trackbacks? - Follow-Up

On Saturday, I wondered if Akismet was killing my trackbacks.

The simple answer is: No.

After Googling the problem for what seemed like an eternity, I ran across this post which shed some light on how to resolve the issue with incoming pings not showing up. The problem was caused by Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam plugin.

Actually, the problem was that I’m a dope and I didn’t read the instructions.

There, I said it.

There is nothing wrong with Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam plugin, I just didn’t enable the “allow trackback” and “allow pingback” settings. In my haste to rid the world of software bugs, I posted the problem description to Peter’s forum and offered to help fix it. Peter was kind enough to simply explain the settings and didn’t make me feel even more stupid than I already did.

Thanks Peter, my ego appreciates you.

I’m now spam free and loving life again. Bring on the pingbacks!

Hmmm, perhaps I should make my plugin more intuitive and make the default setting to be that trackbacks and pingbacks are allowed. Then users can change the settings to disallow either of them. I’ll have to think about that!

    Thanks for the post!

Personally, I expected the trackbacks and pingbacks to be enabled by default, but that’s just me.

I was thinking that it would be really cool if there was an option to send trackbacks and pingbacks to the moderation queue instead of disallowing them altogether. I can’t imagine any blog that would want all trackbacks to be discarded in every case.

I was very impressed with Peter’s quick follow-up myself. I highly recommend his plugin.

    See this post.

Don’t worry that happens to me all the time. I had the same issue, but my friend Courtney Tuttle helped me out with it. It is funny how often I jump to conclusions. Is your traffic doing better?

  11. kevin on July 7th, 2007

I know I had lost a lot of links backs because of it, I ended up moving to spam karma and bad behavior when I moved to wordpress MU which has decreased the issue.

Thanks for the info on akismet. I was wondering the same thing myself as I have comments that have been caught, I just hadnt taken the time to research the issue. You did the work for me :)

Paul: You should definitely install Akismet if you haven’t already. It’s never too soon to enable your spam protection.

Ms Danielle: I’m with you: I check my Akismet every day. I’m often surprised at some of the comments that get stuck in the spam queue, as they don’t seem like spam to me. Better safe than sorry, huh?

Scott: Thanks for adding my blog to your list. I’ll e-mail you separately to add my other blog.

Mark: I have a tendancy to stick my foot in my mouth. I guess that’s what happens when we are men of action. :)

My favorite saying is: It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Kevin: I feel your pain. I had been doing tons of self-promotion during the time I was losing pingbacks, so I was a little dissapointed to say the least. At least it’s working properly now.

Michael: No problem, it was my pleasure. I had a hard time finding any info through Google, so I thought I would share my experience to make it easier for the next person that had this trouble.

Don’t worry about it, I had the same problem a while back and had to go through a similar process to fix it!

Thanks! I just had to remind myself to RTFM.

I like how you used the website link on your comment to link to a post instead of your website’s home page. That’s a great idea. Thanks for the tip!

I very rarely find good comments and trackbacks in Akismet, but it’s enough that I scan it from time to time before deleting the spam queue.

  17. Donovan on July 13th, 2007

Colleen: I find a few good comments here and there, but the thing that troubles me most is that Akismet automatically deletes some comments and the only way I know they even existed is when my Akisment spam counter increases.

Yesterday, I turned-off Akismet to see the type of comments that were being automatically deleted, and to my surprise, they were actually spam. I’m not going to worry about the auto-deleted comments anymore.

I’ve found that it’s picked up a couple of comments that were legit. But generally this thing has saved me a lot of hassle!

I have heard this has been happening, and it is really sad that this is happening. I think the only one can solve this is by actively checking your spam report.

I think this is one risk that you can take, you might lose one good comment but you can stop a hundred spams.
