Quit Smoking with Chantix - Day 1

Today is my quit day. I am a non-smoker now.

I have been taking my Chantix for the last week while still smoking as I normally did. I think I actually smoked a little more in the last couple of days than I usually do, but that was mostly because I was nervous about quitting. I suppose I wasn’t totally convinced that Chantix would actually work for me.

There were a few times during my pre-quit week that I noticed I had gone without a cigarette for an hour or more and didn’t even have a craving. These little moments gave me some encouragement that Chantix was doing its job but I still wanted to smoke. This left me with some question as to how effective it would be at suppressing my cravings when I quit smoking for good.

I woke up this morning thinking about a cigarette, knowing it was my quit day. Would you believe that although I WANTED a cigarette I didn’t NEED one? In a word, I was shocked! I am a 2-3 pack a day smoker, so to wake up on my quit day and not need a cigarette right away is significant to me. I’ve been awake for three hours now and still haven’t been dying for a smoke.

I still can’t believe it.

So far so good. Chantix seems to be working well for me, but we’ll still have to see how I fare throughout the day. I’ll follow-up tomorrow and let you know how my day went.

I also want to say a big Thank You to everyone that’s supporting me right now. It sure does make it a little easier when you know people care. Thanks!

    Seriously, the best way to quit smoking is avoidance training. It worked for a friend of mine, Eric.

    We sat down for a weekend of movie/tv watching. I had a hammer, he did not.

    Every time he began to crave a smoke, he would tell me, and I would smack him with the hammer. After a few hours and many, many hits, he suddenly stopped desiring to have anything to do with tobacco.

    Good luck with that journey! As a former smoker turned non-smoker turned back to smoking again turned back to ‘want to stop again”, I know the battle that you face. Glad to see you’re doing well!

    Thanks everyone for your support!

    @J.D.:
    LOL! I need a good whack with a hammer right about now.

    @The Beginning:
    I tried hypnosis twice in the past and it didn’t work for me. I am a hard-headed type ‘A’ person so the suggestions never stick. I even tried listening to subliminal tapes while I slept with no luck.

    @Don:
    Thanks! I appreciate your support. It’s a challenge everyday.

    Allegedly the desire is genetic…

    Thanks! I don’t doubt the desire is genetic, as I come from a long line of smokers.

    If you find the new gene store, let me know. :)
